Apple has equipped each generation of its smartwatches with an updated System-in-Package (SiP) that includes multiple chips including the processor. However, from the Watch Series 6 to the Watch Series 8, Cupertino has almost always used the same processor. A new report from a credible source suggests that the upcoming Apple Watch Series 9 will get a new processor based on the iPhone 13’s A15 Bionic.
- Apple’s Watch Series 9 will get a new processor.
- This new processor is said to be based on the iPhone 13’s A15 Bionic.
- The Apple Watch Series 9 could be unveiled in September.
As is often the case with Apple questions that lie in the future, the following information comes from Bloomberg editor Mark Gurman, which he shared with his “Power On” subscribers on Discord. According to the journalist and tipster, the next generation of Apple Watch, which will most likely be called Apple Watch Series 9, will get an all-new processor with the S9 system-in-package.

The source added that the Apple Watch’s silicon will be based on the A15 Bionic SoC (System on a Chip), which is also used in the 2021 iPhone 13 and iPhone 13 Pro. However, it is not yet known how much of this will be exchanged between the two packages. That means we don’t know if the overall design and clock speed of the A15 processor will be identical.
Some of the real benefits that the new chip could bring to Apple’s future smartwatches are efficiency and improved performance. Apparently, Apple Watch battery life hasn’t changed much over the years, making an increase in endurance imperative.
What is the operating system and release date of the Apple Watch Series 9?
In addition to the processor, the Apple Watch Series 9 will also receive new software features with watchOS 10. Mark Gurman believes Apple will make “notable” changes to watchOS 10’s user interface. These include widgets and support for pairing with the as yet unannounced Apple XR/VR glasses – also known as Apple Reality One and Reality Pro.
The iPhone maker is expected to unveil watchOS 10 at WWDC23 next month. Meanwhile, the Apple Watch Series 9 and maybe the Apple Watch SE 2023 are expected to be unveiled in September. Apple is also expected to unveil the iPhone 15 series around this time.
