Does the Galaxy S24 Ultra boost its zoom strength with this camera?

Samsung introduced the 10MP telephoto sensor with 3x lossless zoom on the Galaxy S21 Ultra and carried it through to the Galaxy S23 Ultra. A new report now speculates that the South Korean manufacturer will replace the outdated sensor with a new one whose optics are said to have improved zoom capability.

  • Samsung will reportedly put a new telephoto camera in the Galaxy S24 Ultra.
  • The new 5x optics should replace the 3x zoom and thus reduce the gap in the focal length range.
  • It is not known whether the Galaxy S24 and the Plus model will also benefit from this.

Possible camera specifications of the Samsung Galaxy S24 Ultra

Samsung is reportedly upgrading the telephoto lens on the Galaxy S24 Ultra next year with a new 5x optical zoom, which is an improvement over the current 3x system. This information was disseminated by the Dutch GalaxyClub, citing unnamed sources. The publication gave no further details about the camera.

As a reminder, the Galaxy S23 (test) currently only has a 3x optical zoom. There is no confirmation that the 5x telephoto lens will also be used in the Galaxy S24 and Galaxy S24 Plus. But there is a lot to be said for it, because the two smaller models had the same camera module as the Ultra version in the last generation – just without a periscope camera. However, it has been speculated that the 200MP wide-angle camera will also be found in the non-Ultra smartphones next year. This would at least provide enough scope for digital zoom up to a 5x sensor.

Samsung zooms twice

Apart from the new 5x zoom, the Samsung Galaxy S24 Ultra should keep the remaining sensors of the quad camera system: the 200 MP main, 10 MP periscope (10x zoom) and the 12 MP ultra wide angle sensor, in addition to the new telephoto lens.

Apart from that, there are few details about the entire Galaxy S24 series. According to the annual release schedule, Samsung could announce the lineup between late January and early February next year. Before that, the company is planning its second Unpacked event this year in July, which will showcase the Galaxy Z Fold 5 and Galaxy Z Flip 5 alongside the premium Galaxy Tab S9 tablets. The latter should be very interesting, especially with yesterday’s release of the two Razr 40 folding foldables from Motorola.
