Twitter will not meet its obligations even after voluntarily abandoning EU rules to combat fake news, EU industry watchdog Thierry Breton warned the company on Friday this weekend.
Signatory companies are required to provide regular progress reports on how much ad revenue they have blocked from disinformation agents.
They must also provide information about the amount or quality of political advertising accepted or rejected and instances of inappropriate behavior.
“Twitter bypasses voluntary EU anti-misinformation legislation. But the obligations remain. Running is an option, but hiding is futile,” expressed Breton in a tweet.

“In addition to voluntary commitments, the fight against misinformation will become a legal obligation for the DSA starting August 25th. Our teams will be ready to apply.”
Since Twitter was acquired by billionaire Elon Musk for $44 billion last October, the company has cut thousands of jobs and made countless changes.

Twitter, which does not have a public relations department, responded to an email request for comment on the pop emoji.
